Walking into Rockfield Elementary feels less like entering a school building and more like stepping into a warm embrace.
For Principal Unertl, that welcoming atmosphere was immediately clear on the very first day of school. As buses arrived, over 300 students stepped out to find staff and teachers waiting with open arms, setting an uplifting tone for the entire academic year.
"It was the warmest, kindest, most welcoming first moments of school that I have ever witnessed in my career," Principal Unertl recalled.
Every morning, no fewer than six adults greet children at the main entrance—a small, intentional gesture that reflects the close-knit culture of the Rockfield community. Between parents snapping milestone photos, students sharing final hugs, and teachers guiding classes indoors, the morning routine has become a celebration of community.
Nestled among peaceful farmland with neighboring equestrian spaces, Rockfield’s tranquil, rural setting offers more than just scenic beauty; it creates a grounded, focused environment where students can thrive in nature.
"It's truly unique and very beautiful," Unertl noted.
That sense of place extends into the school’s daily culture. When challenges arise, staff and families operate on a shared philosophy: everyone pitches in, and "not my problem" simply doesn't exist.
Principal Unertl indicates the strength of the school community is the collaboration between educators and families and credits Rockfield as a step-up, all-hands-on-deck, everybody-pitches-in environment.
That unity is captured in this year’s school theme: “We’re all different, but we swim together.” It serves as a daily reminder that every student, family, and staff member plays an essential role in the school's shared story.
